The Misconceptions of Dog Breed Identification: A Genetic Perspective

The popularity of Dog DNA tests is increasing, but can they be trusted?

While many people believe that a dog’s breed is determined solely by their genetics, Halie Rando, an assistant professor of computer science at Smith College, argues that this is not entirely accurate. In fact, widely accepted breed definitions were established before the advent of DNA analysis, which can sometimes lead to conflicting genetic testing results and a lack of understanding about a pet owner’s assumptions about their dog’s breed.

Recent research on 459 shelter dogs in Arizona and California revealed 125 distinct breeds, with only five percent being purebred. However, even though the scientists and experienced shelter workers tried their best to accurately identify mixed-breed dogs, they were unsuccessful in doing so. Mixed breeds can be particularly difficult to identify when it comes to DNA testing because the accuracy of test results depends on the genetic information available for identifiable breeds.

Before submitting a sample for DNA testing, consumers should do their research on the company thoroughly. The accuracy of the results can vary depending on the diversity of the company’s genetic panel. Even if you do receive information about your dog’s breed, it may not have a significant impact on their behavior. A recent study conducted on over 2,000 purebred and mixed-breed dogs found that behavior is more closely linked to the individual dog rather than its breed, highlighting that breed is not a reliable predictor of behavior.
