The Idealo platform recently released a report on the Italian e-commerce market for 2024. Despite economic challenges such as inflation and the energy crisis, consumer spending patterns have remained stable, demonstrating the resilience and competitiveness of Italy’s e-commerce sector. The food sector experienced notable growth of 8.8% in 2022 and 9.8% in 2023, with an average increase in consumer prices of 5.7% compared to the previous year.

According to the report, 85% of digital users in Italy make at least one online purchase per month on average, with 24% making weekly purchases. Consumers are increasingly adopting a more conscious and informed approach to online shopping, with price comparison tools being popular among them, with 47% using them to access product information and 46% searching for special offers and discounts. Italian e-stores are competitive with international players, particularly in the sports and outdoor sector where over 58% of the best offers come from Italian e-shops.

The report also highlights the growing interest in the second-hand market, especially for electronics products such as used smartphones and notebooks which saw a significant increase in interest compared to previous years indicating a shift towards sustainable and financially beneficial options. The preferences of different age groups were also outlined; electronics were popular among older age groups while younger ones favored fashion and accessories.

These insights provide valuable information for online retailers to develop effective sales strategies that can help them reach a broader audience by leveraging price comparison platforms. Overall, this data sheds light on how consumers are changing their behavior when it comes to shopping online and how businesses need to adapt accordingly to stay competitive in this ever-evolving landscape of e-commerce in Italy.
