The Scorching Heat of Singapore: The Economic and Health Toll of Climate Change”.

Singapore’s Economy Could Lose Over $1.5 Billion Due to Heat Strain

Singapore’s rapid warming rate, which is twice that of the global average, has caused extreme heat levels in the country. This has resulted in a decline in labor productivity across various economic sectors, with workers experiencing an 11.3% decrease in average productivity in 2018. This trend is projected to worsen over time, with a predicted 14% fall in productivity by 2035.

Workers who are exposed to adverse environmental conditions such as working under the sun or with heat-generating machinery will face even higher economic losses. In fact, for every hot day, workers could experience a median income loss of S$21 per worker due to reduced productivity during working hours.

A recent study by the National University of Singapore revealed these findings and highlighted the urgent need to address the impact of rising temperatures on both individual health and macroeconomic productivity. The study is known as Project HeatSafe and it’s the first large-scale study in Singapore and the region to analyze this impact.

The UV index has reached “extreme” levels twice within four days, prompting concerns about the impact of such intense heat on residents. Not only does it affect cognitive and physical abilities but also poses risks to fertility rates which are already at historic lows in Singapore. These extreme heat levels have also raised global concerns about the planet moving into an era of extreme heat.

On a global scale, scientists have warned that we have surpassed a critical warming threshold, emphasizing the urgent need to address this issue not just for Singapore but for everyone around the world. With temperatures continuing to rise at an alarming rate, it is essential that we take immediate action to protect our economy and our population from its harmful effects before it’s too late.
