The UFL’s Inaugural Season: A Strong Debut, But Can It Maintain Momentum?

UFL kicks off strong during busy sports weekend

In its inaugural season, the UFL made a strong debut during a crowded weekend of sports, with games airing on Fox and ESPN. The Saturday games attracted over a million viewers each, while the Sunday games drew 960,000 viewers for D.C. at San Antonio and 703,000 viewers for Memphis at Houston. While these numbers were impressive, they fell short of the XFL’s opening weekend in 2022, which saw both games exceed 1.5 million viewers.

On the other hand, the USFL had lower numbers during its first week in 2023, with a high of 974,000 viewers. Despite this, there is hope that the UFL can improve upon its Week 1 numbers and maintain or even increase viewership as the season progresses. According to Karp, the high-water mark for the UFL’s first week represents a 56-percent increase over the full-season average for both leagues from 2023. However, history has shown that numbers tend to decrease as spring football seasons progress. It remains to be seen whether the UFL can buck this trend and build a strong and sustainable viewership for its inaugural season.
