Ubisoft cancels The Division Heartland, shifts focus to open-world games

Ubisoft has made the decision to halt development of the video game The Division Heartland, a free multiplayer game that was originally planned for release on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox consoles. The company has stated that it will be reallocating the resources from this project to focus on other opportunities, such as the XDefiant and Rainbow Six titles, as well as open world games.

The development of The Division Heartland was announced in 2021 as a new addition to the Tom Clancy’s The Division franchise, developed by Red Storm Entertainment. Ubisoft’s head of Finance at the time, Frederick Duguet, emphasized the company’s strategy of maintaining Triple A games while also exploring free-to-play games as part of their long-term plans.

However, after three years, Ubisoft has decided to cancel the development of The Division Heartland in order to prioritize other projects. This decision was announced in the company’s latest quarterly earnings report, where they outlined a cost reduction plan to optimize operations and adapt to market trends.

In addition to canceling The Division Heartland, Ubisoft has also halted development of other unannounced titles and reduced their workforce by over 1,700 positions in the past 18 months. The company has stated that they now have 19,011 employees as of March of this year.

Moving forward, Ubisoft’s video game strategy will focus on open world titles like Assassin’s Creed, Rainbow Six, and Star Wars, as well as service games like XDefiant and Rainbow Six. The company’s CEO, Yves Guillemot, has expressed the goal of regaining leadership in open-world games and expanding their presence in games as a service.

Ubisoft will be releasing new games like Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Rainbow Six Mobile, Star Wars Outlaws, The Division Resurgence, and XDefiant in the near future. More details on these projects will be shared at the next Ubisoft Forward event scheduled for June 10.
