The UN Security Council approves resolution urging “urgent” ceasefire in Gaza

In a historic move, the United Nations Security Council has passed a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza during the holy month of Ramadan. The initiative was led by Algeria and nine other non-permanent member countries, who urged for peace and security in the region.

The resolution received 14 votes in favor, with no votes against and one abstention from the United States. Russia had proposed a stronger amendment, but it was rejected by the council.

The Algerian ambassador to the UN expressed his gratitude to the council for fulfilling its responsibility to maintain international peace and security. He emphasized that this resolution is a step towards resolving the conflict in Gaza.

The United States representative at the UN supported the objectives of the resolution and called upon all member states to pressure Hamas to accept an agreement for a ceasefire. The resolution calls for an immediate ceasefire during Ramadan, hostage release, humanitarian access for medical needs in Gaza, and protection of civilians.

This is the first time that the Security Council has called for a ceasefire in Gaza, following previous failed attempts due to vetoes from Russia and China. The United States abstained from voting, despite Israeli objections, as they support this resolution. The resolution also emphasizes compliance with International Law regarding civilians in conflict zones.
