Afghanistan’s Islamic State branch engages in global conflict

The Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP), an offshoot of the Islamic State group, is a radical extremist organization that has been operating in Afghanistan for several years. While no government officially recognizes the Taliban regime in Afghanistan, ISKP is even more extreme and has criticized the Taliban for what they see as appeasement to the West.

One of the main issues that ISKP takes issue with is the Taliban’s meeting with non-Islamic diplomats and accepting aid from unbelievers. However, despite its criticisms of the Taliban, ISKP itself is not recognized by any government and its operations are largely shrouded in secrecy.

Despite its origins in Afghanistan, ISKP’s global ambitions were highlighted by an attack in Moscow that killed 139 people. American officials blamed ISKP for the attack, and Russia later arrested suspects from Tajikistan. In addition to targeting Afghans, ISKP has also carried out attacks in Turkey and Iran, expanding its reach beyond its home country.

While estimates of ISKP’s strength range from fewer than 2,000 to 5,000 members, it remains a significant threat due to its ability to connect with disaffected individuals who may be dissatisfied with their governments or religious beliefs. The current leader of ISKP, Shahab al-Muhajir, is of Arab descent and rarely speaks publicly about the group’s activities. Despite setbacks in Afghanistan, ISKP remains a dangerous and unpredictable force that could pose a threat to global security if left unchecked.
