Nine consecutive months of record-breaking heat, with February being the hottest on record

February 2021 was marked by an unprecedented heat wave, with four consecutive days of temperatures two degrees warmer than pre-industrial times. This made it the hottest month in recorded history, according to the EU’s Copernicus service. The average global temperature for February was 1.77 degrees Celsius above the reference point (1850-1900).

The first half of February saw global temperatures soar, with four days in a row reaching up to two degrees above the reference point. Sea temperatures also broke heat records worldwide, surpassing the previous record from August by over 21 degrees. The rising sea temperatures led to more moisture in the atmosphere, resulting in stronger and more abundant rainfall.

This month’s heatwave has raised concerns about climate change and its impact on our planet. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has warned that global warming is likely to exceed the critical 1.5-degree limit permanently in the early part of the next decade. This underscores the urgent need for action to mitigate the effects of climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
