MUD successfully registers Edmundo González Urrutia as candidate for 2024 Venezuela Elections

Venezuela’s National Electoral Council (CNE) announced on Tuesday that it has provisionally registered Eduardo González Urrutia as a candidate for the upcoming presidential elections on July 28, after the Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD) failed to nominate Corina Yoris. The decision was made after MUD had exhausted all avenues to register their preferred candidate by the deadline.

González Urrutia’s registration brings the total number of candidates to 13, including current President Nicolás Maduro. A total of 37 political parties, some in coalition, nominated their candidates during the process without facing any restrictions.

The practice of nominating a provisional candidate is common in Venezuela and is intended to secure a place on the ballot. Despite challenges faced by the opposition coalition, they are determined to continue participating in the electoral process and to have their preferred candidate registered for the upcoming elections.
