Li Bingjie Sets the Pace in 200 Freestyle

On the third day of the World Championships in Doha, Li Bingjie was the fastest woman in the 200 free preliminaries. None of the medallists from the 2023 worlds were present at the Aspire Dome as Mollie O’Callaghan, Ariarne Titmus, and Summer McIntosh had their eyes set on bigger things in Paris in July.

In the third preliminary heat, Li was alongside Erika Fairweather, who became the first New Zealander to win a world championship by winning the 400 free ahead of Li on the opening evening. Fairweather led by a second at the final turn, but Li came past her to take the win in 1:57.16 to 1:57.40. Olympic silver medallist Siobhan Haughey finished just outside world record pace in fifth place with a time of 1:57.42.

Four women swam under two minutes and one second, with Janna van Kooten claiming the last spot into the semifinals with a time of 1:59.41 as Britain’s Lucy Hope missed out. Li has never won a medal on a global stage and finished second behind Haughey at the Asian Games in September 2023.
