The youngest mayor in Ecuador and a collaborator were killed in a shooting

In a shocking turn of events, Brigitte García, the youngest mayor in Ecuador, was brutally murdered along with one of her collaborators on Sunday. This tragic incident has only added to the wave of political violence that is currently gripping the country.

García, who belonged to the Citizen Revolution movement led by former president Rafael Correa, had just taken office in May at the age of 27. Her death has sent shockwaves through the political community, with Correa expressing his disbelief and sadness on social media.

The police commander of Manabí confirmed that García did not request any police protection or safety devices before being killed inside a vehicle with gunshot wounds. The authorities are still investigating the possible motive and perpetrators behind this heinous crime.

The Association of Municipalities of Ecuador has condemned the murder and pointed out that at least 35 mayors have been threatened in recent years. This highlights the urgent need for better protection measures to be put in place to safeguard those in positions of power and authority.

Ecuador has seen a number of political figures being targeted by violence in recent years, including President Guillermo Lasso declaring a state of emergency due to internal armed conflict after a drug trafficker escaped from a Guayaquil prison. The country continues to struggle with political unrest and insecurity, which is affecting both authorities and civilians alike.
