The Sherburne-Earlville athletic teams have officially changed their nickname to the Timberwolves, replacing the previous name of Marauders. This decision was made by the school board and is effective immediately. The change was necessary due to a directive from the New York State Department of Education to end the use of nicknames, mascots, and logos that depict Native American culture.
The Timberwolves was chosen after a student vote, where it received the most support compared to the other options of Wolves and Wolf Pack. Among high school students, Timberwolves received 48% of the vote, while middle school students voted in favor of Timberwolves with 52%. The official wolf-related logos and fonts adopted by the district in the previous school year will remain the same, as well as the school’s “Maroon and White” colors.
