Hemisfair requests approval for sports pavilion design near Tower of the Americas

The Tower of the Americas grounds in San Antonio is undergoing a review for a new design. Hemisfair, the organization behind the project, is planning to construct a “Sports Court” pavilion in place of the existing pond at the base of the structure. This project is part of the planned Tower Park at Hemisfair and has philanthropic support for funding.

In response to feedback from the public about the need for more public recreation spaces, Hemisfair has introduced this new pavilion. The existing pond, which has been in place since 1988 but has been deemed to have a negative impact due to unpleasant odors, will be replaced by this new structure.

The concrete slab of the pavilion will primarily be used as a basketball court, featuring a 28-foot oval roof to provide shade for spectators. It will also be available for community events and can be rented for such purposes. While renderings of the project are not yet available, this news story was made possible through a partnership between KSAT and the San Antonio Business Journal.
