The Packers have made a strategic decision to move Alex McGough from quarterback to wide receiver. McGough, who is 28 years old, spent the previous season on the team’s practice squad as the third quarterback behind Jordan Love and Sean Clifford. Packers coach Matt LaFleur commented on McGough’s athleticism, stating that he had been running receiver routes on the scout team and excelled in that role. LaFleur highlighted McGough’s talent as an athlete and expressed the team’s desire to give him a chance at wide receiver.
Despite selecting Tulane quarterback Michael Pratt in the seventh round of the draft, the Packers did not choose a receiver or sign one in free agency. However, the team has a crowded wide receiver room, with McGough joining several other talented players such as Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, Bo Melton, Malik Heath, Samori Toure, Grant DuBose, and Thyrick Pitts. McGough, who was named the USFL MVP in 2023, could also contribute on special teams for the Packers, as he has not yet played in an NFL regular-season game.
