Peachtree Corners Trials New Technology to Enhance Cyclist Safety on Roads

In Peachtree Corners, Georgia, over 62,000 cars travel on Peachtree Parkway daily, making it a busy roadway. Additionally, about 600 bicyclists cross this road every Saturday. Assistant City Manager Brandon Branham highlighted the fact that annually, over 1,000 cyclists die and more than 130,000 are injured in crashes nationwide, underscoring the importance of road safety for all users.

Branham emphasized the city’s commitment to safeguarding vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians and bicyclists, especially at intersections where they may encounter vehicles. Peachtree Corners is known for testing cutting-edge technology at its Curiosity Lab, including equipment that can alert both cyclists and drivers about potential collisions in advance.

One of the technologies being tested is the Spoke Companion App, which allows cyclists and drivers to be alerted to each other’s presence on the road. This proactive approach aims to prevent accidents and save lives. The city plans to put this technology to the test during a pro cycling race event this weekend, focusing on improving safety for all road users.

While acknowledging that this technology is still evolving, the city is exploring additional ways to alert drivers and cyclists to potential dangers, including digital signage. The ultimate goal is to reduce fatalities and create a safer environment for everyone on the road.
