Santa Cruz Slalom Skateboarding Mom, 64, Prepares for World Games

Judi’s love for skateboarding started at a young age when she participated in her first downhill race at 15 in Capitola, California. Ever since then, she has been an active member of the local skate scene, and her career in graphic design was kickstarted by her job at the Santa Cruz skateboard company NHS.

Judi packed and shipped skateboard parts and learned how to silkscreen boards during her time at NHS. Her work there not only helped her develop her skills but also gave her a passion for creating unique designs. She later airbrushed surfboards and created window displays for the company, which helped cement her career in graphic design.

Over the years, Judi continued to participate in slalom races while raising two children with her husband. Despite having young children, she never let that stop her from pursuing what she loved. In fact, when official races started up again in 2001, she eagerly jumped back into the world of racing with both feet first. Her kids even accompanied her to the races when they were still in diapers and while she was breastfeeding in their early 40s.

Judi’s hard work paid off when she was inducted into the Skateboarding Hall of Fame in 2018. She played a crucial role in curating the NHS Skate Museum when it opened in Santa Cruz, which features photos and videos of old competitions, colorful skateboards, and vintage skate art. Her original Santa Cruz skateboard team bag is displayed in the museum alongside other skateboarding gear from the 1970s.

One of Judi’s early skateboards is highlighted in the museum as well as one of her helmets from her early days of racing are housed in the Smithsonian Institution Archives. Judi jokingly remarks that having her items on display makes her realize that she is getting older but proud to be recognized for all of hard work and dedication towards this sport.

In conclusion, Judi’s love for skating has been a lifelong passion that has led to numerous accomplishments throughout his career as a graphic designer and racer. From packing boards to winning races to being inducted into the Skateboarding Hall of Fame, Judi’s impact on the sport cannot be overstated.
