In 1974, Volkswagen launched the Golf, which has since become one of the most successful car models in history. To celebrate its 50th anniversary, the German car company is hosting a special exhibition in Wolfsburg, its historic headquarters. Since its inception, over 37 million units of the Golf have been sold worldwide.
The Golf was introduced as a replacement for the Beetle and is still manufactured in Wolfsburg, as well as in other production sites across Germany and seven other countries. Over the years, eight generations of the Golf have been released, with the latest being the Golf 8 presented in 2019. The new model features voice control and an artificial intelligence-based conversation partner, making it even more advanced than previous versions.
In addition to its technological advancements, the Golf remains one of Volkswagen’s best-selling models in Germany. According to Statista, it was the top-selling Volkswagen model in Germany in 2023, with over 81,000 cars sold. Furthermore, nearly a fifth of all cars registered in Germany last year were Golfs. As a result of its continued popularity and success over five decades, Volkswagen is celebrating this milestone anniversary with great fanfare and excitement for what lies ahead for this beloved car model.
