Controversial Katy ISD Technology Policy Sparks Disagreement Among Parents Over Student Use of Personal Devices

A Katy Independent School District parent recently contacted ABC13 to express their outrage over a new technology policy being implemented in the district. The new program will prohibit students from using their personal devices, such as cell phones, in the classroom starting next year. This change is part of the Class 1:1 program, which is being made possible by a 2023 bond. As part of this program, every student in third through 12th grade will receive a Chromebook from the district in August, replacing their personal devices during class time.

Katy ISD stated that the goal of this new policy is to create consistency in instruction and to ensure that all students have access to the same technology. The district believes that removing personal devices will help students focus on learning and minimize distractions in the classroom. While some parents have expressed concerns about the policy, others like Valentina Sepic support the decision, believing that personal devices are a distraction and should be removed from the learning environment.

There are differing opinions among parents regarding the use of technology in the classroom. Some, like Nidhi Kundalia, prefer traditional methods of learning and believe that technology should be used less frequently. Kundalia also mentioned concerns about the cost of maintaining the laptops once they are distributed to students. While the final plan for the new policy is still being finalized, Katy ISD has promised to keep the community updated on any developments.

Overall, the debate over the new policy shows a divide among parents regarding the role of technology in education. While some see personal devices as a valuable tool, others believe that limiting their use will benefit students in the long run. Only time will tell how this new policy will impact students and their learning experiences in Katy ISD.
