SCICON, or the Outdoor School of Science and Conservation, is a magical place located in the foothills of Tulare County, CA. Operated by the Tulare County Office of Education, this school aims to educate fifth and sixth graders on the importance of science and conservation. Every year, over 8,000 students visit the 1,170-acre campus to learn about nature, caring for the Earth, and respecting themselves and others.

The school’s director, Dianne Shew, describes SCICON as a place where students can experience the beauty of the outdoors and gain a deeper understanding of their impact on the environment. Students have the opportunity to hike, learn about aquatic life, and explore a museum featuring local items and animals. One of Shew’s key goals is to instill a sense of responsibility for protecting the environment for future generations.

Unfortunately, in early 2023, SCICON was heavily damaged by historic flooding in the area. The habitat of native salamanders was affected by this flooding. However, with support from community organizations like Friends of SCICON and Disney VoluntEARS who joined in restoration efforts by clearing debris and revitalizing habitat thanks to a grant from Disney Conservation Fund. This grant will not only help restore salamander habitat but also educate students on environmental conservation.

Shew believes that inspiring each child who visits SCICON to take action and spread conservation message is crucial in protecting Earth positively.
