In a recent announcement, Google has confirmed that its generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) model, Gemini Nano, will soon be available on the standard version of the Pixel 8 smartphone family. This marks a significant milestone in the development of AI technology for mobile devices.
Gemini Nano is the smallest version of Google’s large language models (LLM) and is optimized to run generative AI directly on the device. This makes it similar to the Pixel 8 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S24 series, both of which also have LLM capabilities.
Initially, it was believed that Gemini Nano would not be able to reach the Pixel 8 due to hardware limitations. However, Google’s vice president of devices and software services, Seang Chau, has now confirmed that an optimized version of Gemini Nano will indeed be coming to the Pixel 8 later this year. This news comes alongside new functionalities with Android 14 QPR3, including ‘Summary’ in the recorder tool and Gboard Smart Reply.
It is expected that Gemini Nano will eventually reach more Android devices through AICore solution by the end of the year. This solution integrates LLM without needing to connect to the cloud, making it possible for users on any device with AICore capabilities to access LLM functionalities.
The availability of Gemini Nano on the standard version of Pixel 8 is a major step forward in bringing advanced AI capabilities to mobile devices. It opens up new possibilities for developers and users alike, allowing them to create innovative apps and tools that take advantage of LLM technology.
