TikTok Lite halts points and rewards system amid EU investigation

ByteDance has decided to voluntarily suspend the reward functions of TikTok Lite as they collaborate with the European Commission, which is currently investigating whether the app is complying with its obligations regarding transparency and protection of minors. TikTok Lite is an extension application of TikTok that rewards users for watching and interacting with videos. It is currently in the testing phase in Spain and France.

The reward mechanism in TikTok Lite has specifically caught the attention of the European Union, leading to an investigation to understand its impact on minors and how ByteDance is working to mitigate risks such as addictive behaviors. ByteDance has stated that they always collaborate constructively with authorities and have decided to suspend the reward system on TikTok Lite to address concerns raised.

In a brief statement shared on social media, ByteDance announced the suspension of reward features in TikTok Lite while they investigate the concerns raised by the authorities. The European Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton, acknowledged this decision and emphasized the importance of protecting children from potential risks associated with social media platforms.

Breton highlighted concerns about addictive behavior risks and applauded TikTok’s decision to suspend the reward program in the EU. He indicated that cases against TikTok continue due to the platform’s addictive potential and emphasized the need for the Digital Services Law to ensure the safety of the European online space.
